A legacy from the times of being a stop off point for traders and merchants plying the waterways between Malaysia and Thailand, the name Perhentian Islands literally means “one stop island”.
Made up of a small group of gorgeous, coral-fringed islands, surrounded by beautiful white sand beaches and crystalline waters, it plays host to a huge variety of corals, turtles, jellyfish, small sharks, fishes, rays, cuttlefish, parrotfish and the likes.
The two main islands are Perhentian Besar (Big Perhentian)and Perhentian Kecil (Small Perhentian). The other small islands (Susu Dara, Serenggeh and Rawa) are uninhabited and lie off Perhentian Kecil.
Best time to dive:
March – October. During the months of November – February, the North-East monsoon accounts for rough seas and strong winds, which make divings inadvisable.
